Background of the Study

Musculoskeletal pain, particularly in the back, neck, and shoulders, is a common ailment affecting workers in office-based environments. This pain is often associated with prolonged sitting, poor posture, and inadequate workstation design. Adjustable workstations, which allow workers to modify their seating height, desk configuration, and screen position, have been promoted as an effective solution to alleviate musculoskeletal discomfort. The growing trend toward flexible work environments and ergonomic workplace designs has highlighted the importance of such interventions in improving employee health and productivity (Chung & Patel, 2024).

In Kano State, Nigeria, many office workers face significant challenges related to musculoskeletal pain, which hampers their productivity and overall well-being. While ergonomic solutions, such as adjustable workstations, have been shown to reduce discomfort and improve posture (Parker et al., 2023), limited research has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of these interventions in the context of Kano’s corporate environment. The impact of adjustable workstations in alleviating musculoskeletal pain in the region is largely unexplored, and more empirical data is needed to determine their effectiveness.

Incorporating adjustable workstations into office environments has the potential to significantly reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, thereby improving worker health and productivity. Although some businesses in Kano State have started to adopt ergonomic practices, such as providing adjustable desks and chairs, many office workers still experience discomfort due to a lack of proper workstation adjustments. This study aims to investigate the role of adjustable workstations in reducing musculoskeletal pain and their overall impact on employee performance in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite global evidence supporting the effectiveness of adjustable workstations in reducing musculoskeletal pain, there is limited research on their impact in Kano State’s office environments. Many office workers in the region continue to experience musculoskeletal discomfort due to poorly designed workspaces and inadequate ergonomics. Given the potential benefits of adjustable workstations, it is crucial to assess their effectiveness in reducing pain and enhancing productivity among workers in Kano State. This study seeks to explore the relationship between adjustable workstation use and musculoskeletal pain reduction in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of adjustable workstations on reducing musculoskeletal pain among office workers in Kano State.

2. To determine the relationship between adjustable workstations and improved employee productivity in Kano State’s offices.

3. To evaluate the barriers to the implementation of adjustable workstations in Kano State’s corporate environments.

Research Questions

1. To what extent do adjustable workstations reduce musculoskeletal pain among office workers in Kano State?

2. How do adjustable workstations influence employee productivity in Kano State’s office settings?

3. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of adjustable workstations in Kano State’s corporate offices?

Research Hypotheses

1. Adjustable workstations significantly reduce musculoskeletal pain among office workers in Kano State.

2. The use of adjustable workstations improves employee productivity in Kano State’s office environments.

3. Barriers such as cost and lack of awareness impede the effective implementation of adjustable workstations in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on office workers in Kano State, Nigeria, who use adjustable workstations or are familiar with ergonomic interventions in the workplace. It will exclude employees in sectors such as manufacturing or retail. A limitation of the study includes the potential bias in self-reported data regarding pain levels and productivity. The study will also be limited to a cross-sectional design, meaning it cannot capture the long-term effects of adjustable workstations on musculoskeletal health.

Definitions of Terms

• Adjustable Workstations: Workstations with components (such as desks, chairs, and monitors) that can be adjusted to accommodate an individual's body size and comfort.

• Musculoskeletal Pain: Discomfort or pain in the muscles, bones, or joints, often caused by poor posture or repetitive tasks.

• Ergonomics: The science of designing the workplace to fit the physical needs of workers, minimizing discomfort and injury.

• Productivity: The rate at which employees complete tasks or contribute to the overall output of an organization.
